I’ve heard my whole life “boys will be lining up at the door for you if you just lose 50lbs”, “you’re beautiful, but you’d be more beautiful if you’d lose weight”, “you’d be so much happier if you were thinner”, “suck your belly in, you look fatter” “it won’t be easy to find someone who will love you like this”.

those things among many others have hindered me for so long. I heard them over and over again and again.

I feel now, like so much more. More than just a body. More than being anything that makes anybody else happy other then myself.

I’m tired of being told i’m flawed.

i’m just not like you.

It isn’t easy to be body positive. In fact, it’s really fucking hard.

It isn’t easy to be body positive. In fact, it’s really fucking hard. I have been varying degrees of fat my entire life. I’ve been a size 28/30 to an 8/10 (which people still considered fat because of my body shape) to an 18/20 now. Fuck, when I was a year old doctors told my mom to put me on a fucking diet. I’ve been fat since I was born and that is never going to change. Most days I’m meh about my body, some days I think I’m a weird blob, some days I think I am fucking amazing. AND THAT’S OKAY. Because the world makes it really fucking hard to like yourself.

1. That fake it until you make it stuff kind of works. It took a long time, but pretending that I was awesome actually made me feel awesome after a while. It doesn’t always work, but it does at least sometimes now.

2. I view existing as a fat person in this world as a radical act. This is what gets me through bad days and what gives me the ability to wear short shorts as a fat person. I deserve to live in my body, just like everyone else. Covering up my fat legs when it is 90 degrees out just punishes me, because if a person has a problem with it, they’d have a problem no matter what I was wearing. And fuck them.

My approach to fat shaming is the same way I approach misogyny and sexism. Someone catcalls or is a sexist jerk, they get called out. Someone fat shames me, I call them out. Another person is treating you like a lesser human. That’s fucked up and you should be pissed off.

Basically, I just got really fucking angry. It isn’t my job to make other people feel comfortable about my body. It is my job to take care of myself how I see fit. It is my job to wear what I want and do what I want with my body. If that means wearing short shorts and taking up two seats on the train, so be it. Everyone who disagrees can go fuck themselves.

Besides how tight these pants are there is very little “Faintly” in my “Masculine” right now. (scratch that boys wear tight jeans too) How do you feel about a little clown meets 90’s pimp? This is a lot of blue huh?

Fashion has to have a “peacock” affect sometimes. That ability to just have the “look at me! look at me” affect on the rest of the world. I don’t think getting dressed is fun if it’s not “FUN” sometimes. Personal style has to sometimes be about showing that side of yourself completely literally, meaning your emotion of the moment and exactly how you are feeling is translated into your outfit.

I got asked to be a part of “She Rides Her Own Way” and I am aware it’s saying “she” but a lot of the community don’t know about my pronouns yet. Or rather, they’re working on it. But I couldn’t pass this up! We need more brown folks on bikes and getting access to knowledge about bikes, especially with Grand Rapids getting bigger and the busses always being full. Also, supporting the local bike shops is a biggie as well.
